I noticed that it happens only when I press Home right after the screen goes off. If it is off long enough (so that phone locks) it's fine - I unlock the phone and the game continues.

Pause the game, select "Change Level" and then keep pressing "Back" in the top menu - after you reach the main screen of the game press the phone's "back" key and the option to quit the game will appear.
